I am a registered general nurse with over 30 years experience, including hospice work, district nursing and substance misuse. My professional interest has always been in palliative care and I was delighted to be employed through Paul Sartori in the role as Clinical Nurse Specialist role (CNS). I work as part of the palliative team which includes many other disciplines to meet the needs of patients with life limiting conditions. There are four CNS’s covering Pembrokeshire, meeting community and hospital services.
For many patients in the late stages of their illness, palliative care needs are straightforward with District Nurses leading care of patients at home and Hospital Teams in hospital.
However, if there is complex symptom control or psychosocial issues present or predictable, then advice from, or involvement with the Specialist Palliative Care Services should be considered.
The role of the CNS, comprises five distinct areas of concern:
- and research
Our main clinical responsibility is to empower community and hospital staff to deliver general palliative care, with direct CNS involvement reserved for patients with complex needs.
